How To Prepare For A Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Waterloo

extractions with wisdom tooth removal - Campus dentist

If you are one of the many people who will be having their wisdom teeth extraction in Waterloo, you may be feeling anxious about what to expect. Don’t worry. With little preparation, dental treatment can be relatively easy and painless. This blog post will give you tips on how to get ready for your extraction and make the experience as smooth as possible.

Preparation for wisdom tooth surgery

A dentist will usually recommend the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth to prevent pain and discomfort.  Here are some things you should consider before your appointment :

1. Ask questions to your dentist.

Before your extraction day, inform your dentist about any concerns that you have about the procedure. You can ask questions about the duration of the treatment and the recovery period. It is essential to ask these questions, so your mind will be at peace. Additionally, you can inquire about the cost of wisdom tooth removal so you can prepare your budget or see if your insurance provider covers the costs.

2. Disclose your medical history.

One of the essential things you should do is share your medical history and avoid leaving any relevant details. It is a precautionary measure since certain diseases can increase the risk of infection.  You must inform your dentist about any medications to avoid drug interactions.

3. Do not eat before your surgery.

In general, you should not eat anything twelve hours before surgery. By doing this, you will not feel nauseous during and after your surgery. In some cases, patients receiving local anesthesia may not need to fast. Make sure you speak to your dentist about food restrictions so that you will know what to do.

4. Brush your teeth.

Although your dentist will clean your tooth, you still need to keep your mouth clean before surgery. Brush and floss your teeth. In this way, it will help reduce the bacteria in your mouth, which can cause infection.

5. Dress comfortably.

For the procedure, you must wear clothes that you are comfortable with. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes to be more relaxed as you sit on your dental chair.

Post recovery

The wisdom tooth recovery period usually takes a few days. The following are steps you can follow to recover quickly.

  • If you observe swelling on your cheeks, apply an ice pack to the affected cheek.
  • After the surgery, take a rest and avoid physically demanding activities.
  • Follow a soft-food diet after your procedure.
  • Brush your teeth but make sure to avoid the extraction site.
